Sluka does not sleep on innovation. The San Diego band previously covered here with songs like “VIP” and “Iko Iko” is back at it with “Tonight You Belong to Me” — a cover of the American popular song from 1926.
Originally written by lyricist Billy Rose and composer Lee David, “Tonight You Belong to Me” will ring familiar to many, but Sluka’s version carries a dark turn. With Christopher Sluka rocking ukulele and vocals and Anna Eppink offering her own sweet vocals and trumpet skills, the song takes flight.
As does the clip. Set with the two musicians afloat in a hot air balloon, the lush terrain below matches the mood of the romantic song — and parallels the music as the images dissolve into fire and warp through time. Explosive, surprising, and sure to stay with you in melody and in memory, this cover has bite.
