Nick de la Hoyde needed to face darkness in order to find out what was most important to him. Reflecting on this journey culminated in the emotional and energetic track “Stay By Me”.

The Sydney-based artist and songwriter is also known for his work with the electronic musical trio D.E.L. Nick de la Hoyde shifts his solo work with personal stories and organic components. All of this can be heard on “Stay By Me”, which resonates with synth washes but drops into an undercurrent of something raw. The melodic hooks are there, pulling the listener into a world made complicated in emotional tone.

Though the track is upbeat and carries a grand sense of optimism, the lyrics travel a path more convoluted. “Feeling so tired but I’m lying awake / Left in a room gave me pills for the pain,” de la Hoyde opens. Later, the song takes a turn for the candid: “You showed me love when I was on the way down,” he sings, then adds, “I turn to music cause my problems are way loud.”

It isn’t just the music that provides juxtaposition to the lyrics, but the lyric video itself features cartooned bubble letters pulling these sentiments across the screen as de la Hoyde performs underneath. The combination is a satisfying blend of pop hooks, energetic swells, and a pervasive thoughtfulness.
