Progressive rock is overdue for a comeback, and Hidden Beams is a project with a vision and a mission. The catchy rhythms and grand musicality of new single “Animals” has the power to create a wave.

Following the delicate intensity of “Hidden”, “Animals” plunges into the psychedelic. An 80s lushness to the heavy-fall percussion will have you swaying while the vocals propel the song into darker territory. “This life is killing me,” songwriter Carlos Argon sings. “I’m trying to remember just to forgive.”

Hints of spacious — and spaced out — Bowie emerge, as do the soundscapes of Genesis. A wizard of light and colour in the accompanying clip, Argon moves from his influences and into his own sphere. Yoshi Sodeoka expertly wields the visuals, and the end result is trippy and mesmerizing.

Between the journey of the visuals and the spacious scope of the track, “Animals” will carry you somewhere. Like most trips, it’s up to you to decide how deeply you want to experience it.
