“We are lost and lonely,” begins the lyrics of Aman Jagwani’s “This Place”, which features Anubha Kaul on lush vocals. The electronic jazz fusion gives vehicle to a sense of restlessness that so many of us are feeling right now.

The song is an international collaboration, with Jagwani, Kaul, and keys and bass player Ron Cha representing India, flugelhorn player Milena Casado from Spain, and tenor saxophonist Nick Bredal from the US. Jagwani studies drum-set performance and Electronic Production and Design at Berklee, and his talent and effort is clear in this song.

There is depth in the mixing. The brass feels far-off and the rhythm clicks mathematically. As it goes, the song pulls from a sense of chaos, for which the repetition of “It will be alright” become a grounding — and hopeful — force. To create a thematic sense of displacement, Aman Jagwani chooses to change the key. From this choice, there is a feeling of urgency and recalibration.

“This Place” is the title track of Aman Jagwani’s upcoming full-length release, which explores the pursuit of a “better place” in life. This Place will be released on May 21st, 2021.
